Morphological and bone strength indices in girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and their correlations with leptin and soluble leptin receptor

چکیده
Objective Previous studies suggested that leptin has profound effects on bone metabolism and growth. Abnormal leptin and soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R) levels and their correlation patterns with bone mineral density and trabecular bone micro-architecture were recently found to be distinct in girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Structural Model Index (SMI) and data derived from Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are important HRpQCT parameters that can provide important information on the rod/plate-like configurations in the trabecular bone and bone strength respectively. This study aimed to compare the differences and correlations between SMI, bone strength indices and leptin and sOB-R between AIS and controls.

Are Volumetric Bone Mineral Density and Bone Micro-Architecture Associated with Leptin and Soluble Leptin Receptor Levels in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis? – A Case-Control Study
BACKGROUND Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD). The underlying etiology and how it may relate to the development of osteopenia remains unknown. Leptin has been postulated as one of the etiologic factors of AIS because of its profound effects on bone metabolism and pubertal growth. Its modulator, soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R), may affect lept...

STUDY DESIGN This was a case-control study. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the body composition and its correlation with leptin and soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R) levels in girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and compared with healthy controls. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Patients with AIS are associated with lower body weight, taller stature, lower body mass index (...
متن کاملLeptin Receptor Metabolism Disorder in Primary Chondrocytes from Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Girls
To investigate the underlying mechanisms of low metabolic activity of primary chondrocytes obtained from girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS); AIS is a spine-deforming disease that often occurs in girls. AIS is associated with a lower bone mass than that of healthy individuals and osteopenia. Leptin was shown to play an important role in bone growth. It can also regulate the functio...
متن کاملNormal Leptin Expression, Lower Adipogenic Ability, Decreased Leptin Receptor and Hyposensitivity to Leptin in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
Leptin has been suggested to play a role in the etiology of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), however, the leptin levels in AIS girls are still a discrepancy, and no in vitro study of leptin in AIS is reported. We took a series of case-control studies, trying to understand whether Leptin gene polymorphisms are involved in the etiology of the AIS or the change in leptin level is a secondary...
متن کاملAbnormal functional responses of osteoblasts to leptin in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
Objective Leptin has been postulated as one of the etiologic factors of AIS because of its important physiological functions in neuro-osseous development affecting skeletal growth, the onset of puberty, energy expenditure and body composition. Previous studies on the relationship between leptin and HR-pQCT derived bone quality parameters had found abnormal correlations in AIS girls, and suggest...
